Francis Rumsey is a retired academic, with a background in music and audio engineering. Until 2009 he was a professor in the Music and Sound Recording Department of the University of Surrey. He has served in many roles for the AES, including as a Vice President, Chair of the Technical Council, and as Consultant Editor for the AES Journal. He is currently a consultant for Viscount & Regent Classic Organs, as well as being a freelance organist, including a role as organist/choirmaster at St Mary’s, Witney. He studied organ performance with Ann Elise Smoot, and before moving to Witney in 2010 was Director of Music at St Mary’s, Stoke D’Abernon in Surrey. In recent years he has accompanied the Guildford Chamber Choir for cathedral singing visits at Winchester, Rochester, Portsmouth, Romsey Abbey, St George’s Chapel, Windsor and Chichester. He has given international organ recitals at Tokyo University of the Arts, St Etienne du Mont, Paris (Maurice Duruflé’s church for many years), the Cathedral of the Polish Army, Warsaw, and St Matthias, Berlin. He sings bass with Oxford Pro Musica Singers and the Cathedral Singers of Christ Church, Oxford.
