AES United Kingdom Section – Core Blimey! Transformers in Audio

The electromagnetic transformer was first devised in the Victorian age, making it one of the earliest recognisable electrical components. To this day it remains ubiquitous in the power supplies of most electronic and audio equipment, and it’s still valued for input and output signal coupling where it uniquely offers both galvanic isolation and impedance matching capabilities. But despite their widespread use and apparent simplicity, transformers seem to be less well understood than many other everyday electronic components, a situation we’ll aim to redress in this application-focused  “back to basics” tutorial. We’ll unpack what really determines the core flux density, why transformers don’t saturate based on load current, and explore how to properly manage inrush current in big power supplies. We’ll also establish a clear basic understanding of what limits the performance of audio coupling transformers, and hopefully help you to properly specify, select and use transformers in your next audio design project.
