Design Considerations and Objectives in the Design and Development of an Automatic Stereo Cassette Changer and a Compact Stereo Cassette Playback Unit

Universal acceptance of the Compact Cassette System has created a wide field of possible applications and refinements. Philips, the developer of the Cassette System, has designed an Automatic Cassette Changer and Player that are compact, reliable and unique in their construction and performance. The heart of both machines is a newly developed miniature synchronous motor which permitted Philips engineers to simplify the design of such units, thus reducing their cost without sacrificing their versatility and high performance. The following paper describes the design objectives, problems encountered and safeguards created in the development of these units and describes the synchronous motor and its application in the machines.
