The first portion of the paper is tutorial, the object being to describe and demonstrate the effects on speech intelligibility of selected noise spectra that emphasize basic phenomena. For intentional destruction of intelligibility, for example to combat eavesdropping, it is found that there is a -most-efficient- noise spectrum. The method of making the measurement, called a threshold of understanding test, will be discussed and the resulting spectrum will be shown. Additional types of interference will be discussed.
