Diffuse reflection, or scattering, is an extremely important phenomenon in room acoustics and has a strong impact on perceived room acoustical quality and on the applicability of simplified prediction of room acoustic measures such as reverberation time. The importance of diffuse reflection is manifested in an AES work group for the development of suitable measurement techniques for reflection properties: the DISC project. Properties and effects of diffuse reflection, as compared to specular reflection, are discussed. Existing and suggested models for the treatment of diffuse reflection in computerized prediction of architectural acoustics are evaluated, in particular in relation to their feasibility for auralization.
