All transducers have acoustic aperture diffraction effects. Classically these apertures have been analyzed by using the asymptotic form for the optical diffraction problem. The assumptions used in deriving these optical theories are not correct for the acoustics problem. Optical theories, their implications, and examples are presented. A more accurate simulation of the acoustics problem is performed numerically, and the results are compared with the classical optics approach.
