AES Pacific Northwest Section – The Principle of Dynamic Parametric Equalization with Applications

A classic parametric equalizer has multiple bands chosen by center frequency and Q, which allows the engineer to employ an acoustical approach to mixing and mastering, as opposed to an audiological approach more fitting to graphic EQ.

As most “multiband dynamics” and “dynamic EQ” processors employ a graphic architecture, they are intuitive mainly for the terminal phase of a production.

This presentation featuring Duane Wise, Anthony Rodriguez, and Thor Legvold addresses the direct integration of a parametric filter into a classic dynamics processor, the tradeoffs between parametric and graphic cores in dynamics, and the applicability of dynamic parametric EQ in mixing and mastering for both music and sound for film.
