Sean Olive is Senior Fellow, Acoustic Research at Harman International where he conducts research on the perception and measurement of loudspeakers, rooms, automotive audio and headphones. In 1986 he became a research scientist at the National Research Council of Canada where he worked with Floyd Toole and later joined him at Harman in 1993 where he has been since. Sean is a Fellow and past-President of AES and has published over 50 research papers. He recently authored the chapter “Headphones: The Perception and Measurement of Their Sound Quality” in the upcoming 4th edition of “Sound Reproduction: Loudspeakers, Rooms and Headphones” by Floyd Toole, Sean Olive and Todd Welti to be published by Taylor and Francis in the fall of 2025.
Karlheinz Brandenburg earned degrees in electrical engineering and mathematics, including a doctorate, from Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg by 1989. He is currently a Senior Professor (emeritus) at Technische Universität Ilmenau and CEO of Brandenburg Labs GmbH, focusing on immersive audio. After postdoctoral work at AT&T Bell Labs and his alma mater, he led the Audio and Multimedia Department at Fraunhofer IIS and later founded Fraunhofer IDMT, retiring in 2019. A key figure in the development of mp3 and AAC audio coding, he has received numerous honors, including the IEEE Masaru Ibuka Award, the German Future Award, and the AES Silver Medal. He is also a member of the Internet Society Hall of Fame and holds honorary doctorates from universities in Germany and Spain.
