Important Travel Information for US Citizens: Citizens of the United States will need ETIAS to travel to Europe. ETIAS, the European Travel Information and Authorization System, will be operational from the start of 2025 forward. All US Citizens will need to register with ETIAS for Finland before traveling. The new European visa waiver is valid for the entire Schengen Area, not just Poland. As a U.S. citizen, you can visit Poland with ETIAS:
Please visit ETIAS for Travel to Finland for details on the requirements needed and how to apply.
Helsinki Airport is well-connected to the city center and Otaniemi via public transportation.
Take the I or P train from the airport to Helsinki Central Railway Station. From there, transfer to the metro (M1 or M2) towards Tapiola/Matinkylä/Kivenlahti and exit at Aalto University station (Otaniemi). You can buy a ticket from the machine on the platform at the airport station or use the HSL mobile app – see below. An ABC region ticket is needed. The cheapest option is the I train to Huopalahden, then an A or E train to Leppavaara, then a tram down to Otaniemi. For this, only a BC region ticket is needed.
Finnair City Bus and airport buses operate services between the airport and Helsinki city center, where you can connect to the metro.
Taxis are available at the airport, and rideshare services such as Uber and Bolt operate in the area. Note that the pick points for taxis and rideshares are not in the same place.
Car rental is an option. There are several rental companies operating at the airport. You don’t expect to get jammed in traffic around the Helsinki-Vantaa-Espoo region, but please take into consideration limited parking options at the conference venue. Please contact to your hotel with respect to parking options. Parking at the conference venue and Otaniemi campus can be paid using EasyPark or Parkman applications.
For real-time schedules and route planning, visit HSL Journey Planner.
Helsinki has an efficient and reliable public transportation system. The main modes of transport include:
Time Zone: UTC+3 (EEST – Eastern European Summer Time)
Currency: Euro (€)
Service Charges & Tipping: Service charges are included in bills, and there is no strong tipping culture in Finland.
Electrical Outlets and Voltage
In Finland, electrical outlets use the Type F plug (also known as Schuko), with a standard voltage of 230V and a frequency of 50Hz. If you are traveling from outside mainland Europe, you may need a plug adapter and possibly a voltage converter.
More information will be provided as the event approaches. We look forward to welcoming you to Finland!
