AES Pacific Northwest Section – Vinyl Mastering In The 21st Century

Vinyl Mastering In The 21st Century

Presented by: Joe Nino-Hernes, Mastering Engineer, Sterling Sound Nashville

Produced by: Luke Pacholski and AES Pacific Northwest Section of the Audio Engineering Society

Despite the meteoric rise in streaming and being nearly left for dead first by cassettes and then CDs, vinyl never died and has been experiencing a revival for nearly two decades. With that revival has come a resurgence in cutting and mastering for vinyl, which has its own unique issues and requirements. Some topics we’ll discuss are:

– Basics of disk recording and playback

– Analog mastering in a digital world

– The technical and creative aspects of mastering

– The types of sources provided for mastering

– The journey to becoming a mastering engineer

We will also take a look at Joe’s studio.

Joe Nino-Hernes is a mastering engineer at Sterling Sound in Nashville. Audio has long been a passion of Joe’s, from proudly acquiring his first professional tape machine in high school, to restoring a vintage mixing console. After a job selling Hi-Fi equipment, Joe moved to Nashville to become studio manager at The Rukkus Room Studios. From there he was hired by Sterling Sound in 2017, and since then has been cutting records for artists such as Luke Combs, The Black Keys, Norah Jones, and Madonna.
