AES U.K. Section Event – Chair’s Address: Haptics in Audio Reproduction

Loud sounds can be felt as well as heard – a lot of people get a lot of joy from feeling a kick drum beat through their chest or a room-shakingly bassy sound system rumble them from the ground up. Hence, human perception and enjoyment of sound is not just a case of hearing alone. Audio haptics systems have seen increased use in sound reproduction systems to induce tactile sensations that are congruent with auditory perception. This culminates in the creation of a multi-sensory experience of a rendered soundfield supporting an enhanced state of listener immersion. As such, audio haptic technologies have found application in cinema, gaming, automotive and virtual reality settings to augment and extend sonic experiences. In this Chair’s address, the study of audio haptics transducers – their measurement, evaluation and use case optimisation – will be presented alongside discussion of past and emerging technologies that employ haptics as an element of audio reproduction. This will include the exposition of some simple, yet effective, strategies to ensure that haptics systems give us some genuinely good vibrations.
