AUDIO ENGINEERING SOCIETY RECOGNIZES EXCEPTIONAL MEMBER CONTRIBUTIONS AT OPENING CEREMONY OF AES SHOW NY 2024

AES bestowed 13 members with esteemed Society honors at the opening ceremony of its 157th Convention at the Jacob Javits Convention Center.

[NEW YORK – October 17, 2024] — The Audio Engineering Society (AES) bestowed 13 members with esteemed Society honors at the opening ceremony of its 157th Convention at the Jacob Javits Convention Center.

“It was my proud honor to present this year’s awards in person at the AES Convention in New York,” said AES President Leslie Gaston-Bird. “The tradition of shaking hands as each recipient poses for their photo is a proud moment for us all as AES continues to represent the pinnacle of audio scholarship and citizenship.”

Society awardees were announced by President-Elect Gary Gottlieb and presented by Gaston-Bird.

The Society’s highest honor, the Gold Medal Award—which recognizes outstanding achievements sustained over a period of years in the field of Audio Engineering—was bestowed on Gilbert Soulodre for extraordinary contributions to audio, including the creation of the loudness meter that helped address loudness issues in music and broadcast.

The Fellowship Award, given to AES Members who have provided prominent service to the Society, made a valuable contribution to the advancement or dissemination of knowledge of audio engineering, or made a valuable contribution to the application of audio engineering, was presented to Jonathan Wyner.

The Board of Governors Award, given to Members who have rendered exceptional service to the Society, was presented to:

  • Dante Fazio in recognition of co-chairing the 2024 AES International Conference on Forensic Audio in Denver, Colorado;
  • Michael Hagen in recognition of co-chairing the 155th AES Convention in New York;
  • Juan Jimenez in recognition of co-chairing the AES Latin American Conference 2023 in Quito, Ecuador;
  • Steve Martz in recognition of co-chairing the 2024 Audio for Games Conference in Tokyo, Japan;
  • Jeanne Montalvo in recognition of co-chairing the 155th AES Convention in New York;
  • Arica Rust in recognition of co-chairing the 2024 Acoustics and Sound Reinforcement Conference in Le Mans, France;
  • Michael Santucci in recognition of co-chairing the 2024 AES International Conference on Hearing Disorders in Copenhagen, Denmark;
  • Erisa Sato in recognition of co-chairing the 2024 Audio for Games Conference in Tokyo, Japan;
  • Kazutaka Someya in recognition of co-chairing the 2024 Audio for Games Conference in Tokyo, Japan;
  • Jonathan Wyner in recognition of chairing the 2024 AES Symposium on AI and the Musician in Boston, Massachusetts; and
  • Renato Zamora in recognition of co-chairing the AES Latin American Conference 2023 in Quito, Ecuador.

In addition, an AES Citation, given in recognition of services or accomplishments outside the scope of other award categories, was presented to Carlos Fonseca for laudable humanitarian labor using audio expertise to locate survivors of the 2023 Turkish earthquake.

Since 1949, AES awards have recognized individuals who have provided notable service to the Society or have made outstanding contributions to the science and technology of audio engineering and its application. Awardees are nominated by the AES membership, vetted by the Awards Committee and approved by the Board of Governors.
