The Psychoacoustics of Listening Area, Depth, and Envelopment in Surround Recordings, and their relationship to Microphone Technique

Common "purist" two channel microphone techniques can provide a believable impression of depth, but only work for listeners equidistant from the two loudspeakers. With 5.1 channels it is possible to make recordings that have excellent depth, and that localize well over a large area. This paper will present the Psychoacoustics of localization, depth, and envelopment as they relate to different microphone techniques. Often the best results are obtained through a combination of miking and electronic early reflections and reverberation.
