Previous work on matching musical instrument tones in wavetable synthesis has used genetic algorithm (GA) optimization to select the basis spectra that best match 20 target spectra from the original tone. A combinatorial method is proposed that directly selects the basis spectra from the target spectra. The results show that the new method is as effective as the GA method (within 3%), just as efficient, and much simpler. The new method can also be applied to other matching problems, such as group additive synthesis.
