Conventional microphone arrays for true-stereo recording have a number of shortcomings. To improve upon these, a new stereo microphone array using boundary technology has been developed: the Stereo Ambient Sampling System. This paper examines operating principles and drawbacks of conventional stereo microphone arrays, describes the construction and operating principles of the new array, and explains by theory and measurement how it overcomes the drawbacks of previous arrays.
