New aspects of the "Masking-pattern Adapted Subband Coding and Multiplexing" (MASCAM) bit-rate reduction scheme for high quality audio signals are presented. Depending on the dynamic masking pattern, which results from the audio signal, the required resolution of each subband signal is calculated, resulting in a dynamic bit-rate of about 30`11- kbit/s (incl. scalefactors). If the bit-rate of the MASCAM-processed audio signal is kept constant (e.g. 110 kbit/s is available. For instance, this margin could be utilized for getting an extended mask-to-noise ratio with respect to further processing. For the purpose of digital audio broadcasting, it is expedient to utilize the margin for a dynamic bit-error protection, resulting in an extended bit-error resistance. This is especially valid for low-grade masking audio signals needing only a low bit-rate. It is shown that the subjective quality of the transmitted audio signals can be protected in a most economic way by using a source coding process with inherent source-adapted channel coding.
