Notwithstanding the number of high quality phonograph pickups now on the market, certain factors frequently bring about the introduction of still newer, and usually better types. Among these factors are availability of new or improved materials, better techniques of manufacture, new design concepts, changing requirements of technical or commercial nature, and so on. Occasionally, new discoveries are made, leading to better understanding of the extremely complex relationship between the record groove and the pickup stylus. It is the purpose of this paper to describe the important phases of development of a new high quality stereophonic pickup cartridge, the need for which was brought about by some of the above factors.
