The paper contains a linguistic analysis of the nature of language and of mathematics and the problems involved in attempts to establish communication with extraterrestrial beings having unknown cultures and communication patterns. The conclusion is reached that communication is possible only if two or more types of signal (for example, television voice and sound) can be transmitted simultaneously.
