This paper is a tutorial that addresses some of the challenges of designing audio hardware subsystems into general-purpose media production workstations and high performance personal computers. Challenges include: Ensuring sufficient system resources to maintain isochronous audio data stream flow; Synchronization of more than one audio subsystem, and of audio subsystems with other media subsystems; Phase locked loop noise sensitivity; Audio board design, layout, power and ground stack-ups.
