Advances in mixed signal technology integration have brought complex digital signal processing techniques within the reach of ultra cost sensitive applications including home computing and entertainment, home audio and domestic appliance markets. This paper describes a high speed data networking technology which uses mains wiring as the transport medium. The powerline channel is highly unpredictable, as is the interference which can be conducted from the appliances connected to it. The paper discusses the physical characteristics of the channel, the techniques applicable to operating over such a channel, the key requirements of some typical applications and the performance of the nSine integrated solution.
