Post-processing and Computation in Parametric and Transform Audio Coders

In this paper, we consider the relationship of audio coding and post-processing, both of which are important in modern audio applications. We primarily explore computational issues in parametric and transform coders with post-processing at the decoder. In standard subband/transform coders, the signal representation does not readily support general audio modifications. This inflexibility leads to a computational burden at the decoder if post-processing is desired, especially in multiple stream scenarios. We examine this problem, focussing on the basic modification of linear filtering, and show that parametric coders provide a computational advantage over traditional subband/transform coders.
