This paper presents the psychophysical validation of our Head Related Transfer Functions (HRTFs) database, using `static` binaural technique (head movements are not taken into account). After having measured HRTFs for 8 subjects with a high spatial resolution (965 directions), our first goal was to evaluate the performances of static binaural synthesis using individual HRTFs. The long-term goal of this study is to use individual HRTF data as a baseline to perceptually evaluate various HRTF models and individualization strategies, and to assess the contribution of other localization cues (such as dynamic cues provided by head movements and reverberation). In order to compare our results to previous studies, we used an absolute localization procedure across 56 sound-source positions covering the directional sphere. Eight subjects reported perceived the direction of virtual sound sources on a 2D graphical interface, and the collected data was analyzed in terms of front-back confusion rate, average angle of error, and dispersion of the judgments. It could be highlighted that subjects who had training with feedback prior to the experiment showed very good localization performance compared with `naïve` subjects.
