The sweet spot, or the optimal listening area in a room, is a central concept in multichannel audio reproduction. However, it is a difficult attribute to be characterized in an objective way. In this article we develop ways to measure the quality of sound within a wide listening area and draw a map of the sweet spot and its surroundings in a simulated listening room setup. The proposed technique can be used to evaluate and compare multichannel reproduction systems and audio coding algorithms.
