This discussion of ambiguities in interpreting hearing-aid measurements centers around the frequency response as generated with a 2 cc coupler artificial ear vs the subjective measurements of loudnsess of an actual ear; the frequency response as obtained in 2 cc coupler artificial ear vs probe tube measurements in actual ears fitted with different types of earmolds; the difference in reported frequency response caused by variations in length, diameter and other acoustic coupling hardware; and differences in frequency response curves taken on sound boxes and actual anechoic chambers. Errors in frequency response as the result of using improper input sound pressure levels, and the effect of the volume control settings on hearing aids are discussed. It is shown that visual displays can also alter the subjective acceptance of a frequency response curve.
