It is a well-known phenomenon that the presently-authorized system for FM stereophonic radio broadcasting imposes a significant degradation of the perceived signal-to-noise ratio when such broadcasts are compared with monophonic transmission. As a consequence, station coverage area is reduced both for monophonic and stereophonic reception. A new broadcast service, designated FMX, has been developed as a solution to this problem. This paper analyzes the improvements which may be achieved, and demonstrates how audio companding may be implemented in future broadcast transmissions without compromising existing service.
