Development of an Erasable Magneto-Optical Disc Digital Audio Recorder

An optical disc-type recorder has many desirable features: the disc can be erased thousands of times without deterioration of signal quality, quick random access time, ease of handling, and a long recording time. If the recording system were able to realize a low-cost disc media and be compatible with compact disc technology, it would have wide application. This development uses the Kerr effect which controls the polarization angle of laser light beams. A unique method of addressing the recorded portion of pre-grooved disc allows for compatibility with the compact disc.
