Multipurpose halls require a relatively high standard for sound systems. The listener in the audience expects high music and speech quality which he knows from conditions at home. Microphones and loudspeakers are necessary. Their number increases according to the variety of uses the hall is put to. In many cases adjacent rooms are opened to the main hall by movable walls. They must be supplied by delayed sound from speakers placed nearby. Seating areas in these rooms and underneath the gallery are very often not so favorable for theater performances and concerts so far as acoustics is concerned. Multichannel sound systems for cinema and for the main hall are useful. Their quality must be taken into consideration for specification and approval in order to get optimal conditions. As an example, the multipurpose hall in Oberursel will be described. It is known for its good acoustics when musical events take place for which no sound system is necessary. Since its completion in December 1984, the 1200-seat hall has come up to almost all expectations when being used with or without the sound system.
