A 5-Band Companded Technique for Converting Telephone-Quality to Broadcast-Quality Using Two Voice-Grade Phone Lines

A technique has been developed whereby two voice-grade telephone lines can be used to send and receive broadcast-quality audio. The technique involves 5-band compression, shifting the frequency bands of the program during transmission to occupy two 3 kHz bandwidth phone lines, then un-shifting the received phone-line signals, and finally dynamic range expansion to exactly mirror the compression used during transmission. The resulting product has been successfully employed recently by several networks and broadcasters. This papar will report on the development of the technique and its application.
