Results of subjective tests carried out to assess the auditory effects of buffer overflow distortion of a variable delay speech communication system is presented. Results show that by masking the gaps created by buffer over/under flow by signal sections in front of the lost sections, it is possible to significantly improve the perceived quality. The results further show that the length of the signal segments used for replacement and the accuracy of time compensation has little effect on the perceived quality.
