Efficient Least-Mean-Squares Algorithm Performs Audio Distortion Analysis on Sampled Waveforms

The distortion components of a sampled signal (called harmonics) are determined by fitting the waveform with Least Mean Squares (L.M.S.) techniques to a sum of sinusoidal functions. This technique allows the incorporation of distortion analysis capabilities in automated test setups, without the need for expensive distortion analyzers. The basic algorithm is presented. Relationships between data word length and the accuracy of the estimations, are derived. According to calculations and measurements, Total Harmonic Distortion (T.H.D.) figures, as low as 0.01%, can be accurately measured in waveforms, which are coupled with a 12-bit A/D converter.
