Numerical Optimization of the Cross-Over Filter in a Multiway Loudspeaker System

In this paper, a discrete optimization method is described for the optimal design of the crossover filters of a multiway loudspeaker system. The optimization method as been implemented in a digital computer program to enable a fast and flexible design of the crossover filters. The program requires the input of measured sound pressure responses, sound power response, and input impedance of each individual driver. Furthermore, the method accounts for nonlinear constraints such as the power handling capacity of the individual drivers, the minimum impedance of the total system, and the discrete series of filter components values. The result is a set of optimal component values, which are ready for use in a practical environment.
