It is several years since digital audio recorders were introduced into professional audio, and another revolution is now expected in the technology of multichannel recorder design. By virtue of the advance of semiconductor technology, head technology, error correction technology, and system technology, it is now possible to design a highly reliable, smaller sized, less hardware outfitted, and lower tape consumption digital audio recorder. Newly developed A/D and D/A converters, single chip and 16-bit accuracy without any trimming, reduced the cost, increased reliability, and improved the sound quality of multichannel recorders greatly. A newly developed single-crystal ferrite head made it possible to obtain full compatibility of tapes carrying 24 digital channels and four auxiliary tracks on 1/2-in tape. It is also expected that 48-channel digital recording is possible on 1/2-in tape by thin film head technology and tape compatibility will be sufficiently kept. The tapes will be compatible between conventional 24-channel machines and the initial 24 channels of coming 48-channel machines.
