The present paper describes the sound system of a modern theatre, assuming that electroacoustic equipment has lost the function of `improving acoustics` and instead is more and more becoming a tool supporting the work of the director. Explanations are given on the loudspeakers used with regard to their frequency response and their directional characteristics, as well as their location in the theatre. The sound system for the auditorium and for the radiation of effects are described. The technology of microphone used is indicated. The sound system of the Semper Opera in Dresden is taken as an example for demonstrating the possibilities of solving the problems mentioned.
