Trends and Directions in Signal-Processing Hardware for Audio Applications

Recent advances in signal-processing hardware have radically changed both the production and the consumption of digital audio. For example, audio processing that only a few years ago required a room full of equipment can now be implemented with little more than an ordinary personal computer. In this paper, we examine the advances in signal-processing hardware behind these changes and investigate emerging technologies that will further revolutionize audio processing. We explore the tradeoffs associated with key audio processing implementation technologies, including digital signal processors, general-purpose processors, and ASICs. We also highlight how advances in signal-processing hardware are changing system designs and creating new product categories.
