Headset systems have been designed for those commercial and military applications where it is essential for a person using a telephone to have no encumbrance such as a microphone over his mouth, and no acoustical seal by an earphone covering an ear. The microphone is of the inertial, variable-reluctance type and may be mounted in a headstrap at any one of several positions on the head. Ambient noise, especially of the wind-generated type, is suppressed. The earpiece is a button-type earphone designed to have direct-radiating loudspeaker characteristics, and is suspended beside an ear. Alternatively a bone conduction receiver may be used. A subminiature amplifier is used to bring the output of the inertia microphone up to that of a carbon microphone. Mixing circuits are available to interconnect with telephone systems.
