This paper will deal briefly with the why and how of the design of a straight-line phonograph arm and some of the equipment used in its testing. In a brief paper such as this, there is no opportunity to go to great detail about the problems in the design and performance of simple offset arms presently in universal use for the support of pickup cartridges. They will be only briefly touched upon in the following discussion.
