The treatment of retinal detachment still presents a great challenge in Opthamology. The following work describes two possible uses of ultrasound in retinal detachment surgery. Firstly, studies indicate that hemolysis of massive vitreous hemorrhage using ultrasound, withdrawal of vitreous hemorrhage by suction, and its replacement with normal saline, may be possible in cases of longstanding vitreous hemorrhage due to retinal detachment, diabetes mellitus, or hemorrhagic diathesis. Secondly, the radiation pressure effect of ultrasonic energy can possibly be used to retrodisplace retinal detachment, treat giant retinal tears, and position air bubbles placed within the vitreous cavity. Frequencies in the low kilohertz range are used for emulsification and withdrawal of vitreous hemorrhage. The higher kilohertz and megahertz frequencies were selected for retrodisplacement of retinal tissue.
