A loudness meter is an instrument which measures and indicates the average person`s loudness response to speech, music and noise. The operation and design of the loudness meter is based upon the subjective theories and information on the relation between the sound pressure level and the spectrum of the complex sound and the loudness. The loudness instrument which has been developed consists of the following basic elements; input network, octave filters, logarithmic converters, phon to sone converters, loudness compensators, summation logic, dynamical transient integrator and a numerical indicator of loudness. Tests of the loudness meter employing various sound programs indicate that the performance of the meter agrees with subjective performance.
