By carefully choosing the characteristics of a dynamic range compression system, one can minimize the subjective sensation of distortion. A system has been built that allows the sound engineer to vary any of the six parameters affecting the static characteristics. These adjustments will vary for different types of channels and programs. In addition, as the program signal changes, the system automatically modifies its own dynamic characteristics as a function of both the long- and short-term dynamic range.
