The information explosion has created the need for engineering, at a professional level, of sophisticated audio-visual communication systems for learning and business information management environments. The theoretical background of audio-visual communications is examined and a basis for a rigorous engineering discipline is suggested. Examples of audio-visual systems developed for industry and some of the new technology developed at Expo `67 are discussed.
