No standard specification exists for professional audio magnetic recorders. Such a specification should tell if the equipment will interface with the remainder of the system, and how well it performs. The NAB -Open Reel- Standard of 1965 is a basis: some parts are good (tape speed; recording and reproducing frequency responses); some need up-dating (program level; signal to noise ratio; distortion; flutter); and some must be newly added (all interfacing specifications; starting time; time-difference between channels). New IEC drafts have also been considered.
