Sound reinforcement systems for the most part have their performance evaluated by the subjective and sometimes biased opinions of the designer, the owner or user, and the installer. The judgement as to the system`s merits and success depends, therefore, upon whose opinion is solicited. Moreover, in most cases, the most sophisticated test proposed and conducted by the installer consists of saying into the microphone -Hello, testing, one, two, three, do you hear me Charlie?- This paper proposes a series of objective and instrumented tests by which the performance of a sound reinforcing system may be measured and evaluated. Proposals are made for certain new tests which evaluate the system`s ability to deliver clear, intelligible speech to the entire audience.
