This paper will introduce readers to some of the legal and ethical issues regarding unpaid internships. The bulk of the presentation will concentrate of the United States Department of Labor`s Fact Sheet #71: Internship Programs Under The Fair Labor Standards Act. This document discusses the circumstances under which individuals who participate in “for-profit” private sector internships or training programs may do so without compensation. It also lists the six criteria that must be applied when making the determination as to whether or not an internship program meets this exclusion.
