Modern multi-track recording practice requires many rewinds to a selected tape location. It also requires locating different -takes- on one reel. Frequently there is also need for accurate timing in minutes and seconds. At the present state of electronics, modern TTL digital circuitry provides the most sensible answer to all of these requirements.
