Television programming has produced many diverse problems which confront technicians and engineers with the job of creating a scene and picking up suitable sounds. The audio pickup problem is being alleviated by use of specialized microphones. Hideen microphones are required in order not to break the illusion of presence of a studio stage. Personal microphones may be worn by performers but cable entanglements are likely to occur. By far the most versatile method of keeping pictures clear is by using a boom mounted microphone. Boom mounted microphones are limited by their noise exclusion properties which are paramount at greater source to microphone distances. It is the purpose of this paper to describe a highly directional microphone which will have a high signal to reverberation or noise ratio to make it desirable for television boom applications.
