Since its introduction about 28 years ago, the automobile radio has become the largest part of the commercial radio receiver industry and provides a major portion of the audience for broadcasting. As a result of its increased commercial importance, the design specifications for a quality automobile receiver are carefully established. One of the major considerations is the problem of effective sound reproduction peculiar to the automobile. Although we have had some experience with tape and disc record players in the automobile, most of our experience with reproduced sound has been with automobile radio. This discussion concerns the factors affecting the delivery and quality of the sound reaching and interpreted by the listener. Let us consider, first, the environmental conditions affecting the system, second, the system itself, and third, the effects of both the environment and the system on the listener.
