Although masking is a psychological phenomenon, its importance in the field of sound recording and reproduction should not be underestimated. The manner in which the human ear interprets sound waves impinging upon it should be a basic consideration in the design of sound equipment, for it is not entirely accurate to assume, as it is so often done, that the human ear is a simple linear interpreting device. Separate sounds, of differing frequency and amplitude do not react upon the human system in either a simple or regular manner; indeed, the interrelationships are oftentimes exceedingly complex.
