Time delay between bass and treble loudspeakers has been alleged to constitute a fault of sound reproduction. Various tests involving all-pass filters, acoustic delay lines, and varying spacing of separate bass and treble loudspeakers has demonstrated the fact that the hearing mechanism is not sensitive to delays up to about 3 ft; beyond about 4 ft the delay effect becomes audible on some types of program material. Highest quality loudspeakers as used in theaters have been limited to 0.002-s delay.
