The Effect of Active Noise Cancellation on the Acoustic Impedance of Headphones

This paper discusses the impact of Active Noise Cancellation (ANC) functionality on the acoustic impedance of headphones. We therefore show a method for the qualitative analysis of ANC headphone systems considering the occlusion effect (OE) and the “openness” of headphones. A total of 11 different headphones were measured on an acoustic impedance tube and the obtained acoustic impedance of these headphones was compared and discussed. The measurement results show that feedback-based ANC systems have a positive impact on the “openness” of headphones, since the acoustic impedance of closed headphones with ANC switched on is reduced towards the acoustic impedance of open headphones.
