This e-brief presents a case study of a one-semester interdisciplinary experience involving three courses at the Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts at Arizona State University. Participating students in Film Post- Production, Sound Design and Music Composition, experienced during the Spring semester of the 2020-2021 academic year a completely remote Post-Production process of approximately twenty, 10-minute long short films, showcased at a virtual live event streamed to about 400 viewers and listeners. On a student-centric experiential learning standpoint, inspired by Paulo Freire’s pedagogical approach of acknowledging students to be subjects and not objects of the world, the experience explores remote learning tools to develop not only hands-on immersion into industry techniques and workflows, but most importantly agency ecosystems where students can explore the film department’s power dynamics and develop interpersonal skills aside to a diverse set of cultural and socio-political awareness. Focusing on sharing the strategies and findings in these three case student films as a work in progress, this initial study looks forward to further developments as well as to establish a bottom line in the upcoming hybrid remote and in-person framework, aiming for a transdisciplinary engagement between sound, music and the visual arts.
